Everything we use is getting smarter and our electricity grid is no exception. A ‘smart grid’ is an electricity system that has intelligent devices integrated into it allowing greater visibility of flows of energy and active management of generation, distribution and end use. A smart grid is more reliable, easier to maintain and has a lower capital cost of electricity.

The transition to this smarter grid presents lots of opportunities to create new businesses and jobs, to reduce our carbon emissions and for communities to gain greater control over their energy economy.

Regen SW has been working in smart grids since 2010 and has more recently completed a major study on opportunities for Cornwall Council. Through working with the distribution network operators (DNOs), renewable energy developers and communities, we are developing partnerships across the south west to seize the smart grid opportunity.

This paper looks at what the potential benefits are and what we can do to secure them.
