October 2014 – March 2016

The Devon Community Energy Accelerator project provided funding, events and support for Devon based community energy groups, to enable them to develop their renewable energy installations. This project worked in unison with the national Community Energy Accelerator project, funded by the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation.

What we did:

  • awarded £63,000 of funding to 18 organisations
  • ran 13 events, with 343 attendees
  • provided specific tailored support to groups
  • developed a series of checklists

What we achieved:

Contributed towards three organisations installing 412kW rooftop solar PV, which would have either taken significantly longer to deliver or would not have happened, and a pipeline of projects:

  • 485kW of rooftop solar
  • 9MW split between two solar farms to be transferred to community sector once developed
  • 200kW of hydro
  • District heating network in Thurlestone

This is an excellent example of a local authority supporting the community energy sector to develop and grow, which could be replicated in other areas. In Devon this project leveraged in £284,000 for community energy groups, which makes them less reliant on public funding.
