Regen reacts to Contracts for Difference Round Two

11 September 2017

Merlin Hyman, chief executive, Regen commented:

“The tumbling price for power from offshore wind is a huge success for the policy of successive UK governments of supporting developing renewable energy technologies. The UK leads the world in offshore wind and it now has the opportunity to reap the benefits in lower bills and huge industrial opportunities.

New offshore wind farms that will be operating from 2022/2023 will receive a guaranteed £57.50 per MWh. Just two years ago offshore wind farms were being guaranteed twice this price. The price is far lower than Hinkley that is guaranteed £92 per MWh and new gas power stations that BEIS predicts will need a guaranteed £82 per MWh.

The government now has a golden opportunity in its long awaited ‘Clean Growth Plan’ to set a clear policy direction towards putting a smart, flexible and renewable powered energy system at the heart of our industrial strategy and the fight against climate change.

At these low costs it would be worth the Government looking again at opportunities for offshore wind in the Bristol Channel and Irish sea. Not only would this help to create a more balanced energy portfolio, it would also help to cement the UK’s offshore industrial strategy and bring much needed marine jobs to the south west, Wales and Northern Ireland".
