2007 Devon County Council Winner 2007: Most Proactive Local Authority Devon County Council won the Most Proactive Local Authority award this year due to funding and support for renewable energy and energy efficiency projects including: Renewable Energy 4 Devon, EnVision, Carbon reduction analysis as a DSEN partner, Devon County Council Carbon Management programme and work on Devon County Council schools and other buildings. South Wheatley Winner 2007: Best Sustainable Energy Community South Wheatley Renewable Energy Trust installed Cornwall’s first community-owned wind project in October 2006. The 15 kW wind turbine will serve 70 per cent of the hamlet’s overall electricity needs and save 20 tonnes of C02 a year. Income from the wind turbine will be used to provide grants to local householders for energy conservation, renewable energy projects and energy conservation education at local schools. Treco Winner 2007: Best Business Innovation Treco’s aim is to strip the magic and mystery from the biomass market and make changing to renewable fuels both simple and cost effective. The company’s innovative approach includes: the development of the Pod boiler and fuel store, ensuring installations are literally 'plug and play'; provision of support to allow any solid fuel heating engineer to install Treco products; the use of flexible multi-fuel boilers and a nationwide relationship with Countrywide. Cornhill Estates, Poundbury Winner 2007: Best Housing Scheme Cornhill Estates has completed five EcoHomes Excellent Houses and six EcoHomes Excellent Apartments at Poundbury, Dorchester, in a joint venture with the Duchy of Cornwall. This scheme was completed in the spring of 2007 and has achieved the standard of BREEAM EcoHomes Excellent for all the buildings. The houses have achieved in excess of 80 points which makes the scheme one of the highest scoring BREEAM EcoHomes schemes in the United Kingdom for 2007. Tim German, Cornwall Sustainable Energy Partnership Winner 2007: South West Renewable Energy Champion Tim German is championing renewable energy in the region by raising the region’s profile as a renewable energy leader; moving renewable energy up the economic agenda; sharing best practice and assisting replication regionally, nationally and in Europe and championing the concerns of the region’s renewable energy businesses. Tim is continually going beyond the call of duty to share best practice and assisting replication of successful initiatives within the region through presentations and direct mentoring of regional partners. He pours a tremendous amount of energy and his own time into furthering the cause of sustainable energy and giving help to partners and other organisations.
