PPS1 Supplement on Climate Change
Preparing the ground
We support decision makers, creating the right conditions for investment
The Planning Policy Statement 1 (PPS1) supplement on Climate Change sets out how spatial planning should: contribute to climate change mitigation by reducing carbon emissions; and put in place measures to adapt to the unavoidable consequences of climate change. The PPS1 supplement requires local authorities to undertake local evidence base work around the potential for renewable technologies in their authority area and to implement national and regional policies on sustainable energy and adaptation through their own Local Development Documents.
National Planning Policy Framework
Government consulted on the draft National Planning Policy Framework over summer/autumn 2011. If enacted as per proposals, this will sweep away all existing guidance on planning, including the PPS1 supplement. Regen SW has submitted a strong response opposing this idea and other features of the draft National Planning Policy Framework. To learn more and read our response click here.
Planners' toolkit
Regen SW led a partnership project in 2010 with SW Councils to develop a toolkit and training to support planners and councillors in understanding and implementing the PPS1 supplement.
A Consultation on a Planning Policy Statement: Planning for a Low Carbon Future in a Changing Climate was published in March 2010. It is an update to the PPS1 supplement on climate change and looks to merge the supplement with PPS22. The consultation closed on 1 June 2010.
