Neighbourhood planning front-runners announced

The Department for Communities and Local Government has announced the first 17 communities to trial new neighbourhood planning processes set out in the Localism Bill. These communities will work with their Local Planning Authority  to prepare draft plans and Neighbourhood Development Orders for their area, which will for example identify areas suitable for housing or employment land.  Each of the 17 areas will receive £20,000 towards developing their plan from a £1m fund set up to help communities eager to trial neighbourhood planning

If approved by a local referendum, a council will need to adopt a neighbourhood plan providing it is line with wider ambitions for growth in their area.Neigbhourhood Development Orders will enable communities to decide the types of development given automatic planning permission.

The 17 communities and local authorities piloting the scheme include four in the south west:

  • Bristol City Council - Lockleaze (Bristol)
  • Exmoor National Park Authority - Lynton
  • Teignbridge District Council - Dawlish
  • West Dorset District Council - Cerne Abbas
