Regen SW calls on government to back community energy
Regen responds to government’s call for evidence on onshore wind
20 November 2012
Leading renewable energy experts, Regen SW, have called on government to provide a comprehensive framework of support for community energy groups. The call comes in response to the Department for Energy and Climate Change’s (DECC) request for evidence on how communities can have more of a say over, and receive greater benefit from, hosting onshore wind farms.
Regen SW’s response gives examples of leading community renewable energy projects in the westcountry, including Bath and West Community Energy, Totnes Community Wind Farm proposals and the work of Wadebridge Renewable Energy Network. It goes on to call on the government to provide a comprehensive policy framework of support for community energy groups as the best way to ensure local people benefit from wind farms.
Merlin Hyman, chief executive of Regen SW commented, “There are a growing number of community energy groups, which understand the needs of their local community as well as the responsibility we all have to reduce our nation’s carbon emissions. They are in the best position to engage or work in partnership with renewable energy developers, negotiate benefit schemes that are appropriate to their local setting and to set up community owned developments.
The government has made a commitment to support community owned renewable energy schemes. It is now time to set out how they intend to do this.”
Regen is also supporting community energy groups through the Communities for Renewables programme, which helps communities to think about and progress renewable energy projects in their area.
