Technology Strategy Board launch new £10m marine energy competition.

The government are launching a new £10m competition for developers to support the successful deployment and operation of the first series of wave and tidal arrays from March.

The Technology Strategy Board (TSB) announced last week that from 5 March it will seek proposals that support research, development, and demonstration of technologies that solve common issues faced by firms trying to deploy marine energy systems.

The TSB said prospective research projects could include:

  • Work on tidal array cabling
  • Subsea electrical hubs
  • Installation and maintenance vessels for tidal arrays
  • Navigation and collision avoidance
  • Anti-fouling and corrosion

"The results of this competition are expected to help UK businesses to build sustainable economic growth by exploiting new innovative technologies in a growing market and by removing barriers to successful array deployment" the public-private body said in a statement.

While up to £6.5m will come from the TSB, Scottish Enterprise is set to contribute £3m and the Natural Environment Research Council £1m. The competition is also designed to complement other public funding initiatives, such as the Department for Energy and Climate Change's (DECC's) Marine Energy Array Deployment capital grant scheme, the Energy Technologies Institute's (ETI's) wave and tidal energy system demonstrator programmes, and the Scottish government's Saltire Prize.
