Spotlight on South West Companies - November

Two South West companies involved with operations at EMEC.

Precise, efficient, reliable – Insight Marine Projects Ltd is continuing to provide professional, tailored support to the marine renewables industry in challenging environments.
The emerging wave and tidal sectors are providing plenty of opportunities for Insight Marine Projects Ltd. This summer two projects in particular highlighted the professional capabilities of this Cornish based company – during the installation of a drilled-in monopole foundation for Bauer Renewables Ltd, and the recovery and subsequent redeployment of Atlantis Resources Corporation’s AR1000 tidal turbine, both at the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) test site in the Orkneys.
Using precision surface and subsea positioning techniques mobilised at short notice to DP ships such as the North Sea Giant, Olympic Zeus and the Boa Deep C, Insight Marine Projects were able to establish all relevant positions of vessels, tugs, ROVs, dynamic offsets and drilling/lifting equipment in real time. Critical to the success of each project were the innovative methods for broadcasting navigation data across the vessel for real-time display to ROVs, marine ops and client offices.
Insight Marine were also able to respond to specific client requests such as the development of an early warning system to notify surveyors/DP crew of a potential run-off; this system was seen as critical in an environment where tidal currents can reach 4m/s and response times to such an event are measured in seconds.

“A drilled foundation of such dimensions and under such difficult conditions has never before been executed. This new technology has captured the attention of many tidal energy developers, this tremendous achievement marks the BAUER Group’s entry into the future growth market of marine renewable energies and broadens the Group’s range of off-shore technologies.”Professor Thomas Bauer, Chairman of the Management Board of BAUER Aktiengesellschaft.
