Regen SW's Low Carbon Development Programme
Regen SW's low carbon development programme commenced in October 2007. The programme is engaged with reducing operational carbon emissions from new buildings and not those that result from energy embodied in materials or those emitted in the construction phase of new developments (see Definition of Low Carbon Development).
The programme's objectives include raising energy standards in five key developments across the region and engaging the construction and development community on low carbon development. The underlying aim of the programme is to accelerate the deployment of on-site renewable energy capacity and energy efficiency technology, thereby providing more jobs and enhanced opportunities for SW sustainable energy businesses.
In 2008 a series of "Integrating renewable energy into new developments" seminars were run across the region. These seminars provided up to date information on low-carbon new developments to 370 building specifiers.
5 ambitious new developments
In 2007/8 a competition was held to select the 5 most ambitious new developments across the region. The developments chosen were Derriford in Plymouth, Cranbrook East of Exeter, Project Taunton, NW Cheltenham and Whichelstowe in Swindon. Support has been provided to all developments. Notable milestones have included the publishing of Element Energy's Energy Strategy for the East of Exeter and the commissioning of an energy strategy for Derriford.
