Liquid Biofuels

This section refers mainly to biofuels from energy crop sources. These include bioethanol and biodiesel made from crops including sugarcane, palm and rapeseed.

Biofuels can be produced locally (rapeseed biodiesel) or imported (sugarcane, palm oil, etc). They can be used as a renewable fuel in the transport sector or burned to produce heat and/or electricity. The RTFO (Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation) will utilise most biofuel supplies for transport applications. Liquid biofuels therefore have very limited application in buildings and indeed should not be considered for any stationary applications. The Gallagher Review (July 2008) on biofuels recommended that biofuel uptake be slowed down until sustainability concerns can be dealt with.
