South west resources
Regen SW has an area of its website dedicated to supporting decision makers on driving sustainable energy in the south west. Click here to view this area of the Regen SW site.
South west renewables resources study
The Department for Energy and Climate Change has funded Regen SW to develop renewables resource assessemnts for the south west. These resources include:
- A heat map of the south west - developed by the Centre for Sustainable Energy with Geofutures and available to view at www.southwestheatmap.co.uk
- Wind resource showing unconstrained areas
- Hydropower opportunities - produced by the Environment Agency
The GIS data layers of these projects will be available from Regen SW for local authorities. An adminstrative fee of £550 will be payable for the package of layers and will include an hour of telephone consultation.
The Environment Agency has also produced a biomass resource assessment, which may be available at a later date.
Regen SW would like to develop a microgeneration potential assessment for the south west that is of use to local authorities. If you have a view on what this should contain, please contact gwaddell@regensw.co.uk
The availability of these south west resource assessments means that in your local evidence base you would not need to re-produce the same assessments, but rather undertake a more limited exercise of interpreting the data for your local area.

Other data sources
- Schools Data - The DCSF (formally DfES) hold Energy and Water returns data for every school in England (identified by Unique Reference Number (URN)) collected over three years between 1999 and 2002. This data set includes postcode data which would enable these heat demands to be linked to an output area.
- Public Buildings Display Energy Certificates (DEC) – Display Energy Certificates provide a building’s Operational Rating between A and G expressed as kgCO2/m2. They also include a table showing heating and electrical annual energy demands together with the heating fuel.
